echoes of loss.

Woman on Shadow
from Pexels;

The midnight slowly hums the song I long to lose. It reverberates inside my head, but I do hope not between the spaces of your lungs. I have memorized its lyrics of loss—it still desperately cries. It begs for some release from me to you; it pleads us to fall apart.

It is only when you have burned your first cigarette that I realize this is fear. By the time the dawn wakes, I know you will disappear. I ask you to finish the bottle of whiskey so you will become nauseous enough to stay for the last night.

And when it has happened, I watch you sleep because I feel as if I have missed the nights I should have stayed awake and now, it is too late.
