to drive.

by Kent Bonham

She lived in order. She followed the manual book or read the instructions included in anything she bought. Her favorite section had always been the cautions. When I gave her a car as our anniversary gift, she asked me for the guidebooks, but I told her it was safe to drive an automatic. The ambulance called the night she would have met me for our dinner, and I rushed to the hospital with the car’s manuals. The doctor was speaking in his jargon, but I could only look at my wife’s cold body and her wedding ring on the floor.

  1. Oh , I felt that one. Just got a new car on Saturday, and I’m still trying to figure out all the bells and whistles. Car’s sure have changed in the last ten years. This thing has something called an airbag… I thought that was my motherinlaw. Maybe I ought to beware…

  2. Oh my gosh, that’s horrible. You mean she really was killed in a car accident because she didn’t read the car’s owner’s manual?

    1. More of her anxiety spiked as she was driving and an accident occurred due to her lost of concentration (she kept on thinking she was doing something wrong as she didn’t read the manual). Anxiety brings out a lot.

  3. Well told. I didn’t expect the tragic ending. Perhaps I should have done; I hate automatics! I liked the way you augmented his feeling of guilt by having him rush to the hospital with the manuals.

let me hold your words before you leave;
